Matthew's excitement started to ebb after we dropped Riston off and got to his school. We were chatting with a few friendly faces and the more we talked the softer his voice got. He started hiding behind me and soon wanted me to carry him. We walked over to his class and we could see the apprehension building. He did not want us to leave, starting crying, grasping for us and soon wailing. We made our break after about 30 minutes and the school director scooped him up and spent some time with him. I got a call about 30 minutes later, dreading the worst, but hearing good news instead, that he had stopped crying and had joined the class and was participating.
Heartbreaker moment: walking into the room at pick-up time. He was watching the parent's come in and the moment he spotted us, he broke into a big relief cry. He was trying to tell us about his day all the while crying in relief that we actually returned. Then he said, "Mom, it was tooooo long!" However, by dinner he was ready to share and trade stories about his school day with his brother. I am sure we will replay this song and dance on Wednesday when he goes to school again!
